The DevTeam Alpha News Aggregation service has sourced the following article originally published on AIT Themes:

Citadela WordPress Directory plugin is special for its ability to enhance any modern WP theme with portal functionality. The basic requirement is compatibility of the theme with WordPress 5.2 and active Ait membership (no matter which one). To find out where you can use this plugin on your site, what are its advantages and differences compared to our old portal themes, read our previous article about 1st WordPress directory plugin that adds directory features to any block based theme.

Today we’ll show you how does Citadela WordPress Directory plugin work and what exactly does it add to the WordPress editor:

We recently changed the location of Special Pages and created a separate new Custom type from them. You will also learn more about newly added Custom types and directory blocks (updated in January 2020).

1. Citadela Directory WordPress plugin settings page

The first thing you’ll notice after installation of the plugin is that there is a new settings page called Citadela Directory in the sidebar (on your left hand side in wp-admin). Here you can set up Google Maps API key and insert the generated keys for Google reCaptcha v3 to eliminate spam on your site.

2. Custom type Items

First Custom type that Citadela Directory plugin adds to the administration is type Items. There are following fields in its submenu:

  • All Items – you can create new items here. If you previously had any of the directory themes from Ait-Themes, you’ll find all your “old” migrated items here too.
We’ll give you a step by step guide for creating an Item in a separate tutorial.
  • Add New (Item)
  • Item Categories – here you can add and edit individual categories for items
  • Item Locations – likewise the above, add and edit item locations

3. Citadela Directory blocks that can be placed anywhere

In the current version of Citadela Directory plugin there are 7 universal directory blocks available. Their variability lies in the fact that you can insert them anywhere on the page – into Posts, Pages as well as into special pages created by the plugin itself.

These are the following directory blocks:

  • Directory Map – Displays items on the map according to selected parameters
  • Directory Search Form – A block through which users search for items
  • Directory Categories List – Displays a list of categories by certain parameters
  • Directory Locations List – Displays locations by certain parameters
  • Directory Items List – Displays items according to filter selected by the user
  • Directory Map (for posts) [NEW] – Displays posts on the map according to selected parameters
  • Posts Search Form [NEW] – A block that allows users to search for posts

4. Custom type Special Pages [NEW]

Initially, Citadela Directory plugin generated several Special Pages directly within Pages. Later, these Special Pages were separated to a specific section and transformed into Custom type. So now you can find a new Custom type Special Page in admin – now located directly in left sidebar (as a new menu item). This change was made to make Special Pages visible, but the principle of operation remains the same as before.

If you’ve already entered data on the Pages, you don’t have to worry, you won’t miss anything. All data were migrated during the update.

These are the following special pages:

  • Directory Search Results page
  • Item Detail page
  • Item Category page
  • Item Location page
  • Posts Search Results page [NEW]

What are special pages used for?

Special pages can be used to create a structure and layout of the page. That means you can set which blocks will be on a certain page as well as where they’ll be placed. You can also reorder the blocks, move them around the page, sort them to columns or completely change the default layout.

Reordering blocks in special page layout

At the same time you can remove a block that you don’t currently need and add it back later. This is the biggest difference between Citadela Directory plugin and our old directory themes, in which the layout of the directory pages was more or less fixed, based on the design of the directory theme in use.

Automatically extracted data

Special pages are also characterized by the fact that they automatically pull a certain type of data onto the page – search results, items, categories, or locations. Web visitor gets to the special page by searching for an item, category or location and clicking on results. So, keep in mind that anything you add to special pages will appear on all other related pages with this data.

Since Special Pages are automatically generated by Citadela Directory plugin, they cannot be deleted.

5. Citadela Directory Blocks for Special Pages

Each special page has different directory blocks. The biggest advantage is the flexibility of their arrangement. You can choose the blocks you need and display them on the page or reorder them to achieve a completely different layout of your page. For example, you can arrange blocks into columns or insert other WordPress core blocks in between them; or even add Citadela Directory blocks that can be inserted anywhere (blocks from section 3 above).

As mentioned above, different blocks are available for each Special Page. But don’t worry. You don’t need to search for them precisely, because only specific blocks are displayed on a particular Special Page.
